On a long enough timeline, selfishness reveals itself to be shortsighted gratification in exchange for long-term failure. We as a species still aren't very good at assigning proper value to things that don't immediately affect us.
We don't have a long history of society at such a huge scale. We're still iterating solutions.
We do have limited time left on a few critical issues — climate change and mass extinction. But, these are solvable.
Today, we're really learning the power of communication tech in creating shared narratives that guide real action. Unfortunately, this has been used in pretty shitty ways so far.
But, it seems like people are starting to understand our interconnectedness and are organizing for meaningful collective action that respects the dignity of all life.
