On Emotional Independence

On the tension between feeling deeply and the fear of being indebted to another.

You let yourself feel intensely, but cruelly you reject this humanity from yourself as soon as you accept it. You live to give yet you fear taking, for being indebted to someone else feels like giving up a portion of your freedom. What is there that another man can do that you cannot do yourself with some perseverance? Nothing. Why then give up your freedom so cheaply, and only for a momentary lack of courage to face some perseverance?

Recognize that your expectations are unfair. You expect an unbelievable amount of demonstrated effort before you allow yourself to even consider showing yourself to someone.
